Overheden en bedrijven binnen de sector zijn al jaren op zoek naar nieuwe manieren om schone, duurzame energie op te wekken. Er is echter nog veel meer werk te doen op dit gebied.<\/p>\n<p>Een <a href=\"https:\/\/smarterbusiness.co.uk\/uk-renewable-energy-percentage-2018\/\">derde (33%) van de Britse elektriciteitsopwekking kwam in 2018 uit hernieuwbare bronnen<\/a> (voornamelijk wind- en zonneparken). Maar gas bleef de belangrijkste energiebron, waarbij iets meer dan 40% van de Britse energie in het tweede kwartaal van 2018 afkomstig was van gasgestookte centrales. Dat gezegd zijnde duiden de recente ontwikkelingen op een positieve toekomst voor de energiesector in Groot-Brittanni\u00eb.<\/p>\n<p>Plannen voor het zonnepark Cleve Hill, het grootste ooit in Groot-Brittanni\u00eb voorgesteld, werden in juli 2018 uiteengezet. Indien gebouwd, zou de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/environment\/solar-farm-renewable-energy-kent-a8455971.html\">zonne-energiecentrale 1.000 hectare beslaan aan de noordkust van Kent<\/a> en tot 350 MW (megawatt) aan opwekkingscapaciteit leveren. De centrale zou ook batterijopslag omvatten, waardoor exploitanten de mogelijkheid krijgen om energie op te slaan wanneer de elektriciteitsprijs laag is en te verkopen wanneer deze gunstiger is.<\/p>\n<p>Meer recentelijk, in februari 2019, onthulde <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/feb\/11\/biggest-offshore-windfarm-to-start-uk-supply-this-week\">De Deense ontwikkelaar \u00d8rsted ook plannen om een \u200b\u200boffshore windpark te bouwen aan de kust van Yorkshire<\/a>, in een poging de leemte op te vullen die is ontstaan \u200b\u200bdoor mislukte kernenergieplannen. Zodra het park in de tweede helft van het jaar voltooid is, zal het een miljoen huishoudens van energie voorzien \u2013 waardoor het twee keer zo krachtig is als het huidige grootste offshore windpark voor de kust van Cumbria.<\/p>\n<p>Met dit soort ontwikkelingen is het duidelijk dat wind- en zonne-energie vooroplopen op het gebied van hernieuwbare energiebronnen. Maar wat zijn de andere alternatieven? Kernenergie, biomassabrandstof, geothermische energie en waterkracht zijn allemaal mogelijkheden \u2013 maar ze zijn niet zonder hun eigen problemen. Kernenergie laat bijvoorbeeld hoogradioactief afval achter. Terwijl de dammen die werden gebruikt om waterkracht op te wekken een bedreiging vormen voor land- en waterdieren.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-1 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-five\" style=\"--awb-text-color:var(--awb-color8);--awb-margin-bottom:30px;--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:30px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-medium:30px;--awb-font-size:28px;\"><h5 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"font-family:&quot;Montserrat&quot;;font-style:normal;font-weight:500;margin:0;font-size:1em;line-height:1.3;\">Een veelbelovende toekomst<\/h5><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2 fusion-text-no-margin\" style=\"--awb-font-size:20px;--awb-line-height:1.5;--awb-text-transform:none;--awb-text-color:var(--awb-color8);--awb-margin-bottom:30px;--awb-text-font-family:&quot;Montserrat&quot;;--awb-text-font-style:normal;--awb-text-font-weight:400;\"><p>Helaas staat een wereld die uitsluitend afhankelijk is van schone en hernieuwbare energie niet voor de deur. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat we de komende decennia nog steeds afhankelijk zullen zijn van fossiele brandstoffen. Het is echter belangrijk om te onthouden dat de weg naar hernieuwbare energie evolutie is en geen revolutie.<\/p>\n<p>Maar ondanks de onzekerheid op de korte termijn ziet de markt voor hernieuwbare energie op de lange termijn er veelbelovend uit. Er zijn een aantal technologische ontwikkelingen die ertoe bijdragen dat de droom van een wijdverspreid gebruik van hernieuwbare energie werkelijkheid wordt. Het is misschien niet verrassend dat deze zich vooral richten op wind- en zonne-energie.<\/p>\n<p>Hoewel zonne- en windenergie beide haalbare vervangers zijn voor traditionele brandstofbronnen, vereisen ze wel adequate opslagoplossingen \u2013 wat ongelooflijk kostbaar kan zijn. Door de vooruitgang op het gebied van lithium-ionbatterijen zijn de kosten tussen 2012 en 2018 echter met meer dan 70% gedaald. Als gevolg hiervan is de inzet van energieopslag in veel landen toegenomen en <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gqrgm.com\/2-ways-technology-is-transforming-the-renewable-energy-market\/\">voorspellingen geven aan dat deze in 2020 zelfs kostenconcurrerend kan worden met elektriciteit uit het elektriciteitsnet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Digitalisering en kunstmatige intelligentie (AI) maken ook de integratie van hernieuwbare energie mogelijk. Het National Center for Atmospheric Research in de VS heeft bijvoorbeeld AI-software ontwikkeld om windvoorspellingen te verbeteren en werkt nu aan hetzelfde voor zonnevoorspellingen.
